All the Real Girls (2003)

Directed By: David Gordon Green

Written By: David Gordon Green (Script/Story) and Paul Schneider (story)

Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Paul Schneider and Patricia Clarkson

Synopsis:

Sleeping with your best friend’s sista puts the complicated in life.

Musings:

It always amazes me how the setting of a film can dictate the pacing and style. All the Real Girls is chock-full of long takes, slow editing and sweeping shots of beautiful landscapes as life unfolds in the small-town South. I appreciate attention to that kind of detail.

David Gordon Green continues to impress me with his mad skillz as a director. The acting is always phenomenal and this early film of his is sprinkled with a verisimilitude that is difficult to achieve. Zooey Deschanel, Paul Schneider and Patricia Clarkson put on a fantastic show. The third wheel is played by Danny McBride and his characters name is “Bust-Ass”, need I say more?

On the down side, the pacing gets frustratingly boring and the 3rd act is missing some oomph. I’m not sure that oomph would even work in a film like this, but I was left a little unsatisfied. If you don’t feel like watching this then watch David Gordon Green and Danny McBride team up in the HBO show East Bound and Down – a little slice of perfect.

Problem: Dialogue is a touch too witty

Mood for watching: Agoraphobic

What to eat and drink: Apple Pie and a Root Beer float

If I made it: Danny McBride would be in 72.5% of the movie

Why watch: Zooey Deschanel
