Contraband (2012)

Directed By: Baltasar Kormákur

Written By: Aaron Guzikowski

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Beckinsale

Synopsis:

It really sucks cleaning up your idiot brother-in-law’s mess because he’s shitty at crime.

Musings:

This movie is a great example of how the action genre can retain aspects of good filmmaking while staying true to its original purpose. Granted, this movie doesn’t have any of the explosions or running sequences we have grown accustomed to, it does have some good old fashion helicopters, drugs and violence.

Giovanni Ribisi may be the most under appreciated actor in Hollywood. His “bad guy” performance in Contraband rivals that of Alan Rickman in Die Hard. I would watch this again just to see his scenes. Watch for him in the next 10 years, I think he might get a couple of statues for his work. Marky Mark is always fun and Kate Beckinsale (which I always thought was Beckinsdale with a D) is just fine.

I’m not going to hail this as some masterpiece and in no way is it a game changer like T2. What it does have going for it is some great aerial photography, a cool shootout and the best use of duct tape that I have ever seen on screen, Red Green would be proud.

Problem: Marky Mark is way too strong

Mood for watching: Devious

What to eat and drink: Poutine and coconut juice

If I made it: Ex-criminals would have jobs that are more exciting than security installation

Why watch: Giovanni Ribisi
